About Me

I write general and/or children’s humor under the name Ann Asher, and slightly grimmer fiction (for adults) as Ansley Asher.

Given the chance, you might ask me, “Why do you write humor?” Or, “Why do you write kid’s humor?” (Even if you wouldn’t, let’s pretend, okay? That way we’ll have something to talk about. This is the “About Me” section, after all.)

Anyway, the answer to both questions is pretty much the same. When I was trying to decide what kind of writing to focus on, a saying came to mind: Art should be beautiful, because life is often so ugly. I thought about my own childhood, which wasn’t particularly great. I thought about the many kids out there who don’t have a lot to look forward to, and probably don’t want to read yet another depressing story. When I was a kid, I read for escape. Most people do. Even as adults.

Plus, I love to joke around. I like to turn things on their heads. I like to play. And I love a good poop joke. I think that The Day My Butt Went Psycho, by Andy Griffiths, is extremely clever (Yeah, okay, so it’s not “beautiful,” but it is funny, and laughter can be beautiful). I probably never grew up. So, writing children’s humor seemed to be a natural fit. Kids have been voted (by me) most likely to appreciate what I have to say. Strangely enough, that said, my jokes for adults and kids aren’t too far apart. In fact, they can almost be interchangeable (maybe minus the poop jokes–maybe). My jokes tend to be situational, and I try not to be offensive, just entertaining.

So far, my more “serious” work for adults hasn’t yet come to fruition, which is another reason I continue writing humor–that’s what I’ve had luck with. I’ve completed a 20,000 word, middle grade, futuristic adventure, and am working on a silly fantasy novel for the same age group about a boy and his unusual pet.

Personally, I’m a very wysiwyg (what-you-see-is-what-you-get) kind of gal, not brutally honest, just not interested in putting on an act. I like real-time strategy games like Warcraft 3 and Civ 4. I like The Sims. I look forward to Spore. I need to get out more. I’m a poet but don’t know it. Kill me now.
